ICC Champions Trophy, formally known as the ICC KnockOut Trophy cricket tournament, was played in ODI format, organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and played in ODI format. The very first champions trophy was organized and inaugurated in Bangladesh in 1998.
According to the current format, the top eight World Cup-ranked teams compete to earn a position in the tournament. Since then, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and Pakistan have won the tournament once, while Australia and India have been the two most successful teams, winning twice.
Pakistan won the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy held in England and Wales. The upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan.
List of Winners
The ICC Champions Trophy has been held eight times in different countries since the year started. Since then, seven teams have won the Champions Trophy. The list of the winners from 1998-2017 is as follows:
- South Africa won the ICC KnockOut trophy for the first time in 1998; the match was between South Africa and West Indies, where South Africa defeated West Indies by 3 runs. This match was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
- New Zealand won the second ICC KnockOut trophy in 2000, defeating India by 4 wickets. This match was held in Nairobi, Kenya.
- Sri Lanka/ India both won the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy as joint winners after rain interference for two consecutive days. The match was hosted in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
- West Indies won the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, the match took place between West Indies and England, where West Indies won the finals by 2 wickets in London, England.
- Australia won the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy against West Indies by 8 wickets; the match was hosted in Mumbai, India.
- Australia again won the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy, defeating New Zealand in the finals by 6 wickets in Century, South Africa.
- India won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy; the match was between India and England, defeating England by 5 runs hosted by England in Birmingham.
- Pakistan won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, defeating India by 180 runs. The match was hosted in London, England.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be hosted by Pakistan this year after the victory of Pakistan in 2017 and UAE was confirmed as the neutral venue with Dubai hosting all the India matches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed the ICC that India will not travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy.
The ICC Champions Trophy is being conducted after almost 8 years. The first match of this series starts from Feb 19, 2025, eight teams will compete this year- India, Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, England, and South Africa.
